Active guidance means the missile has its own onboard seeker that actively hunts and tracks the target, without needing the launch aircraft to continuously illuminate the target. RS-AA-12 Adder uses this type of guidance, so it can home in on the target with its own radar in the terminal phase. This differs from semi-active guidance, which requires the launcher to illuminate the target, and from passive guidance, which relies on detecting the target’s emissions. Doppler is a sensing technique used in some seekers, not the primary guidance type here.
